Review: Hepatoprotective activity of Spirulina species.

Spirulina is a filamentous, photosynthetic, spirally-shaped, multicellular cyanobacteria. The most important species of Spirulina are Spirulina maxima, Spirulina fusiformis and Spirulina platensis. Its chemical composition includes proteins (55%-70%), carbohydrates (15%-25%), essential fatty acids (18%) minerals, vitamins and pigments like phycocyanin, carotenes, chlorophyll a etc. Spirulina is considered as consisting hepatoprotective agents against toxicants such as CCl4, alcohol, acetaminophen etc. Carbontetrachloride is known to produce free radicals and to induce cirrhosis, steatosis and necrosis in hepatic and renal cells. Our present study summarizes the hepatoprotective activity of spirulina against acute CCl4 exposure in rats.
